How to build unique sample libraries

“You can take the sound nerd out of the studio”

Hello!

It’s been a little while since I emailed you. You see I was starting to feel burned out after a long stretch of work. So, I took some time away to recharge.

And during my time off I had the great fortune to visit Peru!

I hiked Peruvian mountains, jungles, and coast. And you can bet I didn’t miss the opportunity to record audio on my travels.

Picture this:

Me with an entire group hiking a mountain. And asking everyone to wait while I peel off to record some interesting sounds with my binaural microphone 😀Worth it!

You know what they say, you can take the sound nerd out of the studio!

I highly recommend this for you by the way:

Start recording more sounds from your life.

It’s like a sound diary which when you listen back can transport you to that specific time.

And it’s also a great way to build up your own unique sample library.

Two things to keep in mind with this:

  1. You don’t need to travel to a Peruvian mountain to find interesting sounds - For example: I’ve morphed a recording of a Belgian train into this highly cinematic & atmospheric pad sound for use in a live set.
  2. And you don’t need a fancy microphone to get started - You can just start recording with your phone.

Maybe we should do a sample flipping challenge?

Andri
